I have to admit that when I first laid eyes on the new Cadaver CD "Necrosis" I was feeling a little skeptical about the possibility of it being any good. First of all the name Cadaver brings to mind extreme gore metal bands whom I wont name but who really aren't very good. Then there is the logo; it is very old school death metal looking, another sign that this is probably some really bad metal with really bad production. Never judge a CD by its cover. I don't know how many times I've bought a CD because it had a great cover and got it home only to find it was a real turd. On the other hand, sometimes some really cool music comes with minimal or ugly packaging. Such is the case with the new Cadaver. The production is actually really good considering the style. The music is fast and frantic and brutal, yet I can even make out much of what the singer is saying. While the production sounds like it was done by someone competent, the songs still manage to keep a very raw sound to them, thus proving you can be brutal and listenable at the same time. And hello, the music seriously rocks. There are no new trails blazed here, but what they do I think they do well. This will likely be among the CD's I reach for when I want death metal in the next few months. |
