Some time last year while perusing the heavy metal section at my local Record and Tape Trader, I noticed an unusual looking CD by the band Dave Brockie Experience. I'd never heard of this band before and my curiosity wetted (how dare a band exist and I not know about them!) I went home and found some clips from some of their songs online. I immediately decided that this was not a band for me; it just seemed really stupid at first listen. So I wrote them off (and that CD still sits there in R&TT taunting me every time I go in there.) So yesterday I received a promo copy of their second release "Songs for the Wrong" and my first thought was, "Oh, these guys. Greeeeat." But as I scanned their bio sheet I noticed some glaring facts that immediately changed my entire perception of the situation. THESE GUYS ARE FROM GWAR! Oderus, Jizmak, and Balsac. Now all the pieces fall into place and this band makes sense to me. The fact that the music is goofy and the lyrics are insane is actually totally rational given the right circumstances (which these are.) GWAR rules, so already I'm more favorable inclined to like this CD. I am now in the proper frame of mind to hear this CD. I find myself growing a bit more conservative as I get older, but not in the typical stuffy conservative fashion. I think I just realize the need for tact in some situations. I've outgrown the need to be rude to people for no reason. Things like that. I still hate music censorship. And I think a joke about pretty much anything is funny (if you can't laugh at yourself, you take yourself wayyyy to seriously.) That said, I am well aware that the lyrics and music of GWAR (and I'm sure DBE) are meant for our amusement and not meant to be taken seriously. Looking down the track list I cringe at the possible complaints some of these songs could conjure. They also sound like they could be damn funny. So here's my caveat: If you think you might easily be offended by music or the written word then you should stop reading now and not even consider picking up this CD. Then you should also remove your head from your rear. Onward. Track 1, "Damn That Money" doesn't say a whole lot, but I guess like most people he has a hard time holding on to money. Like the guitar track though, it rocks. "Slowpoke" is more the style I am expecting from GWAR-alumni. It's twisted, it's sick, and that's all I'm going tell you. For more you will have to hear it yourself. Track 3 speaks for itself. Not your typical love song. "The Chinese Have No Cheese" is a nice punky ditty with some crazy lyrics. What about crab Rangoon? The vocals are very reminiscent of some GWAR tunes the way he sings here. I like it. Alright, enough of the song by song narrative, this will get too long. This is the short version. If you like GWAR you probably won't go wrong with this CD. If you don't know GWAR but are sick in the head, certifiably insane, or criminally offensive, you will probably enjoy this CD. DBE make M.O.D. look like nice, well behaved young men. DBE are doing their part to expand the boundaries of bad taste. I might be concerned about the gods-awful direction our morals are going in here in this country if I wasn't laughing so hard. I find movies like Jackass (never saw the show) to be a total waste of time and money. That is just stupid, not funny. DBE could show the Jackass guys the difference between offensively amusing and just plain stupid. Ok, I'm done now. You've been warned. DBE is coming for you! |
