I was very excited to receive this copy of the new Insomnium CD. I came into possession of their last album "In the Halls of Awaiting" through my sister and thought it was a great disc. I am definitely looking forward to hearing the new material. This is certainly a bit different in style than most of the music I receive from Candlelight. Musically they almost remind me of In Flames because of all the melodic guitar work flying all over the place. Vocally it is still pretty harsh but it gels well with the music. Music this cool really deserves better production that it has received. The production is ok, but it could be so much more powerful and clear than it is. Still, it's better than most. The clean guitar work sounds nice. But with top class production I could see this band joining the ranks of In Flames and Dark Tranquility in the hearts and minds of America's Hot Topic mallcore kids. Whether that would be good or ill is not for me to decide, but I'd still like to hear them with a sparkling crystal recording. The good definitely far outweigh the bad on this disc. You can tell that a lot of thought and work went into this CD, and I hope that it ends up paying off for these guys. Maybe they could hook up with Andy Sneap to produce their next album, I love his production sound. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and pick up "Since the Day it All Came Down." |
